Two New Instruments at SSW (Tribocorrosion and UV-Vis)

SSW is announcing the installation of two exciting new instruments:

  • A Bruker UMT Tribolab tribological testing system
  • An Agilent Cary 60 UV-Vis spectroscopy system

The tribological testing instrument was funded through Associate Professor and SSW Affiliate Member Dr. Yolanda Hedberg. And the UV-Vis spectroscopy system was funded through CFI.

Tribocorrosion

The Bruker Tribolab can be used for the tribological testing of several materials, including metals, pThe Bruker Tribolab can be used for the tribological testing of several materials, including metals, polymers and plastics, ceramics and composites, thin films and coatings, and biological specimens. This system can also be used to investigate the effect of lubricants, oils, and greases on wear and corrosion properties. This system also includes a Tribo-Corrosion Kit, which enables the evaluation corrosion properties while simultaneously simulating wear behaviour.

The following modules are available:

  • UMT-TL-BASE TriboLab base system
  • Fast reciprocating (oscillating) linear drive (horizontal motion)
  • DFH-10G Friction/Load Sensor
  • Tribo-Corrosion Kit: Electro-Chemical Module

UV-Vis

UV-Vis Spectroscopy is an analytical technique that measures the absorbance or transmittance of UV/Visible light through a sample. The absorbance of light through a liquid can provide information on the species in the solution and, in some cases, enables quantification by using calibration standards.

The Agilent Cary UV-Vis system housed at SSW operates in the 190 to 1100 nm wavelength range and has a Peltier element for temperature-controlled UV Vis spectroscopy measurements (up to 40 ºC).
